Americans are still waiting for agreement on a long-term transportation bill. Frustratingly, Congress is again down to the wire, waiting until the last possible hours of the last possible day to reach an agreement.
Americans are tired of the brinksmanship that’s affecting their ability to bring home a paycheck and provide for their families. At the same time, our roads and rails are deteriorating without the federal funding necessary for repairs and improvements to meet the transportation demands for the 21st century. And last month’s jobs numbers reveal all of this tumult is having an effect on the economy. In May, the economy gained only 69,000 jobs, increasing the unemployment rate slightly from to 8.1 percent up to 8.2 percent.
Congress, enough is enough! As you tussle over the minutia in this bill today, keep in mind that 3 million jobs are at stake. That’s more jobs than were created in the entire economy all of 2011 and 2012 combined!
If Congress does not clear the way forward today, damage to the integrity of our nation’s infrastructure may be irreversible. There’s no economic growth when construction equipment goes idle, especially during the construction season.
We’re still waiting for a long-term transportation bill. It’s time to put politics aside, and do the right thing by passing the Senate’s version of the transportation bill.
