The following post is from Erin Bzymek, Press Secretary for the BlueGreen Alliance.
A top political aid recently said this regarding the Production Tax Credit, long touted as necessary to the success of the wind energy industry, "We need conservative Republicans who can say, ‘This means jobs to my district,' ... and we need Democrats to say, ‘This is a way to expand the range of options that we have in this country for energy.’”
Who would have thought those words had been spoken by…Karl Rove?!
It is in fact true, that he’s the latest in a string of conservatives to proclaim their support for PTC adding his name to a long list that includes the likes of noted conservative Congressman Steve King of Iowa, Kansas Governor Brownback, Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa and Senator Dean Heller of Nevada.
Making even stranger bedfellows, former White House Press Secretary for the Obama administration Robert Gibbs echoed Rove’s sentiments in support of the PTC when they recently appeared on stage together to address the wind industry Tuesday at Windpower 2012 in Atlanta.
It’s rare, but not impossible, that such political opposites bridge the political divide – evidence of the importance of PTC for the economy.
Thanks largely to the PTC, the wind industry was off to a running start with over 400 American manufacturing plants building wind components; wind is now supplying 25 percent more electricity to Americans than it was a year ago; in March 2012 wind was responsible for 29 percent of the energy supply in Iowa and 32 percent in South Dakota; and the wind industry is on track to produce 20 percent of America's electricity by 2030.
Tell Congress to support the Production Tax Credit today! Areas of growth in our economy such as the wind industry can’t sustain growth without continued investment. That’s something someone Republican or Democrat, conservative and liberal and Karl Rove or Robert Gibbs can all understand and get behind.
