Michigan labor and environmental organizations representing an estimated 450,000 Michiganders today stood together to reject attempts to weaken the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Citing the importance of these protections to job creation and public health, representatives from the Michigan AFL-CIO, United Steelworkers (USW), Michigan American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the Sierra Club highlighted several resolutions passed by labor organizations and local unions throughout the state in support of EPA’s authority to protect public health and the environment under the Clean Air Act.

After Governor Snyder delivered the State of the State in Michigan, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Jobs21! National Co-chair Mark Schauer saying that the state must continue its efforts to create jobs through clean energy and fuel efficiency standards.

Former Michigan Congressman and BlueGreen Alliance Jobs21! National Co-Chair Mark Schauer led a roundtable discussion today at the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) to urge Michigan to invest in its transportation systems and crumbling infrastructure and increase public transportation to keep America competitive, decrease pollution and create good, green jobs. The discussion was followed by a tour of the CATA facility expansion.

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) joined business, labor, environmental, civic and investor leaders at a news conference earlier today in highlighting plans for a foundry facility in Eaton Rapids that will cast hubs and other components for wind turbines and at full production could bring approximately 200 new jobs to the area. The event at Dowding Industries/Astraeus Wind Energy also marked the release of the BlueGreen Apollo Alliance’s Michigan Green Manufacturing Action Plan (GreenMAP), a report that provides a roadmap for growing clean energy and creating jobs in the state of Michigan.

The Sheet Metal Workers’ in Michigan was dedicated in 1977 and had the first “straight” air solar heating system in the state and it continues today to provide workers with skills to make homes and businesses more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

With no end in sight to the jobs crisis, unemployed workers and local residents gathered in Monroe today to call on elected officials to invest in infrastructure to create good-paying construction jobs and jumpstart Michigan’s economy. Similar actions are planned across the state this week in Lansing, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Sault Ste. Marie, Kalamazoo and Monroe. The rallies are being organized by We Are the People and BlueGreen Alliance.
