The BlueGreen Alliance (BGA) seeks qualified candidates for the position of Washington State Coalition Organizer.

BGA was formed in 2006 by the United Steelworkers and the Sierra Club in recognition that the future of working people and the health of the environment are inextricably linked. Now, together with 13 of the nation’s largest labor unions and most influential environmental organizations, we are fighting to protect the planet and advance racial and economic justice. The labor unions and environmental organizations of the BlueGreen Alliance reject the false choice that we must choose between good jobs and a clean environment. BGA builds a shared agenda between the labor and environmental movements on bold measures critical to advancing a future American economy that addresses climate change, protects public health, advances racial and economic justice, and creates good-paying union jobs in safe and healthy workplaces in communities across America. BGA develops policy, produces research, builds coalitions, provides education, advocates these policies at the local, state and federal level, and mobilizes working people to take action.

Job Summary: BGA is seeking a dynamic professional to join our team as a Washington Coalition Organizer. The Washington Coalition Organizer is responsible for maintaining and growing the Washington BGA steering committee. The Washington Coalition Organizer develops and implements organizing strategies to grow public awareness and advance Washington BGA policy initiatives. The coalition’s current strategic priority is making Washington a leader in clean manufacturing, including the production of low-carbon materials like aluminum and steel and clean energy technologies, and advancing buy clean and buy fair policies. The coalition organizer’s other outreach and advocacy work will be driven by steering committee members’ shared interests and capacity. This may include, but is not limited to, tightening safety standards at oil refineries, growing access to zero-emission vehicles, and promoting high-road labor standards in clean energy development. The Coalition Organizer also provides organizing and communications support to the Washington Policy Manager to achieve BGA policy initiatives. The Coalition Organizer reports to the Washington Policy Manager and may work closely with other BGA staff, labor unions, environmental groups and other allies.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coalition management;
  • Plan and facilitate steering committee meetings;
  • Maintain regular communication with steering committee members;
    Grow the steering committee and deepen relationships through one-on-one meetings;
  • Onboard new steering committee members;
  • Create and maintain systems to track steering committee member participation and priorities;
  • Facilitate direct collaboration between steering committee members on shared priorities;
  • Solicit input from steering committee members on Washington BGA policy initiatives;
  • Coordinate and support Washington BGA working groups; and
  • Field solidarity requests from steering committee members and allied organizations.

Organizing and outreach

  • Develop and implement organizing strategies to achieve Washington BGA policy initiatives, in coordination with the Washington Policy Manager;
  • Cultivate steering committee member participation in developing and implementing organizing strategies;
  • Mobilize allied organizations to support Washington BGA policy initiatives and to participate in organizing strategies;
  • Represent Washington BGA to the public, including testifying at legislative hearings and regulatory proceedings, in consultation with Washington Policy Manager;
  • Plan and conduct public education events such as webinars and workshops;
  • Develop fact sheets, sign-on letters, and other advocacy materials; and
  • Assist with national BGA campaigns as needed.

Communications

  • Maintain Washington BGA email lists;
  • Develop content for the Washington BGA website and Facebook, in coordination with BGA communications staff and the Washington Policy Manager;
  • Work with BGA communications staff to develop and implement communication tactics that align with organizing strategies; and
  • Other duties, as required.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of experience organizing legislative or issue-based advocacy campaigns.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative structures and work in coalition.
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple campaigns and to work independently.
  • Ability to travel throughout Washington as needed.
  • Experience working with labor unions and environmental groups preferred.
  • Familiarity with climate change policy and related issues preferred.
  • Familiarity with Washington political landscape preferred.
  • Ability to travel across region when health and safety allows it; occasional out-of-area travel required.
  • Strong commitment to economic, racial and environmental justice.
  • A deep commitment to the mission of the BlueGreen Alliance.

Additional Information: Salary range $60,000-$70,000; generous benefits package, which includes medical and dental, 401k with company match, generous vacation and holidays, and a friendly work environment. This is a union represented position, represented by USW Local 2002. The position is based in the Seattle metropolitan area or Olympia.
