Nica C. Tanaka is the California State Policy Organizer for BlueGreen Alliance. She is responsible for growing California’s policy initiatives that lead to climate-forward jobs, clean industry standards, and widened access to zero-emission vehicles. Nica partners closely with union and environmental leaders to create strategies that build climate resilient infrastructures while championing worker equity and improved job quality for California workers.
From 2017-2021 Nica was as an organizer for unions at the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO; an experience that gave her hand-in-hand connection with manufacturing, entertainment, hospitality, and construction workers during mass layoffs. Nica has created English literacy programs for Asian immigrant women in the Bay Area, written workforce development grants for janitorial workers in Silicon Valley, and supported trafficked Filipino homecare workers.
Nica is originally from Manila and her first language is Tagalog. Besides policy organizing, Nica is also a writer and artist. She draws, paints, and sews.
Nica earned her BA in Geography and Peace & Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley. She is now completing her first book as an MFA student of Creative Writing at San Jose State University.
