Republicans Unveil Job Killing Bills to Pad Billionaire Pockets
Today, the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means and the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce will meet to markup proposed bill text for the Congressional reconciliation process.
The GOP proposals would gut critical clean energy and manufacturing investments in the Inflation Reduction Act that are currently growing good-paying jobs across the country, investing in clean manufacturing, reducing pollution in our air and water, and lowering energy costs. Specifically, the draft text proposes:
- Attaching restrictions to clean energy and manufacturing tax credits that would make them unusable in practical terms while also “sunsetting” those tax credits early, a move that research suggests will increase costs for American families;
- Repealing the Clean Vehicle Tax Credits;
- Repealing the Clean Hydrogen Tax Credit;
- Clawing back unspent funds for air quality monitoring in schools, clean manufacturing, state and community energy programs, and electric grid upgrades;
- Defunding and delaying the Methane Emissions Reduction Program (MERP), which reduces pollution and protects the health of workers and communities;
- Clawing back all unspent Inflation Reduction Act funds, including many provisions that would have lowered energy bills, created jobs, and reduced pollution; and
- Attacks on many additional Inflation Reduction Act programs and initiatives.
These cuts are being proposed to fund tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans by killing job-creating programs, eliminating incentives to reduce pollution, and stripping healthcare from millions of Americans.
Prior to the markups, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:
“Make no mistake, the bills on the table are no compromise. This is a poorly veiled attempt to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act. The legislation in its current form would kill jobs and increase costs for working people. It will snuff out investment in manufacturing and clean energy—ceding leadership in advanced manufacturing to other nations. And what for? To pay for President Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Nobody should have to lose their job, live with polluted air and water, or go without healthcare so Elon Musk can get even richer. That is what this comes down to: the members of Congress who vote for this are killing jobs to fund a tax break for billionaires, and their constituents will remember that betrayal.”
