Visualizing U.S. Transit and Rail Manufacturing

About the Map

This interactive map provides information on U.S. manufacturing facilities involved in the transit supply chain, showing company/facility names, locations, and information about products manufactured and vehicle types. It also includes geographic details, including congressional districts, coal closure communities, disadvantaged communities, and deindustrialized communities (see Underlying Data section below the map for details).

2,912 operating facilities across rail and bus sectors

1509 operating facilities in the bus sector.

1603 operating facilities in the rail sector.

200 facilities operating across both sectors

Details

Facilities on the map are organized into broad classifications of production, including sector (bus and rail), vehicle type (transit bus, high-speed rail, etc.), and production tier.

  • Tier 1 is final vehicle assembly
  • Tier 2 is propulsion systems, electronics, and body
  • Tier 3 is parts, inputs, and main materials
  • Tier 4 is transit infrastructure, vehicle remanufacturing, and support services. This includes, track infrastructure (rail only), station/maintenance infrastructure, and vehicle refurbishment

See Methodology for more details

*The hard-hit community categories shown on the map include “Disadvantaged Communities” as defined by the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ); “Coal-Closure Energy Communities” as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and “Deindustrialized Communities” as defined by the BlueGreen Alliance (BGA). See BGA’s Hard-Hit Communities Map for more information.

Description

Sector Indicates the transit sector that the facility supplies. Selecting “Bus” shows facilities with bus-specific production, while selecting “Rail” shows facilities with rail-specific production. Facilities supplying both sectors will appear under both sector filters, with pop-up details corresponding to the selected sector.
State The state where the facility is located.
Congressional District

The congressional district where the facility is located, following boundaries for the 119th Congress. Using U.S. Census Bureau shapefiles to determine location: For states which redrew districts for the 119th Congress (AL, LA, GA, NC, NY), 2024 TIGER/Line Congressional Districts (119th) shapefiles for the respective states were used. For states where 119th and 118th Congressional Districts stayed the same, the 2023 Cartographic Boundary Files Congressional Districts (118th) national shapefile was used. Note: a national shapefile of the 119th congressional districts from the Census Bureau was not available at the time of publishing.

The congressional district boundaries visualized on the map use a file for the 119th congress published by ESRI.

Facility Status The current status of the facility as of late 2025. This can be “Operating,” “Closed,” or “Expected Closure.” The majority of facilities are “Operating.” Facilities with other statuses were not collected systematically and thus may not be comprehensive.
Tier Where the facility sits in the supply chain.

  • Tier 1 is final vehicle assembly
  • Tier 2 is propulsion systems, electronics, and body
  • Tier 3 is parts, inputs, and main materials
  • Tier 4 is transit infrastructure, vehicle remanufacturing, and support services. This includes equipment related to , track infrastructure (rail only), station/maintenance infrastructure, and vehicle refurbishment.

When a facility manufactures in multiple tiers, it is assigned the lowest numbered/most final tier. For example, a facility that performs final assembly and also manufactures propulsion systems is labeled as Tier 1 on the map but will appear in results both when Tier 1 or Tier 2 filters are selected.

Low Emissions Vehicles (bus only)

Indicates facilities in the bus supply chain that produce materials, parts, or final assembly for electric vehicle (EV) buses.  Non-EV-specific inputs (e.g. tires) are excluded. This excludes fuel agnostic inputs to EV vehicles (e.g. tires).
Hard-Hit Communities

A list of the hard-hit communities that the facility is located in. These can be “Disadvantaged Communities” as defined by CEQ; “Coal-Closure Energy Communities” as defined by DOE, and “Deindustrialized Communities” as defined by the BlueGreen Alliance (BGA). See BGA’s Hard-Hit Communities Map for more information.
Map Popup Fields Description
Company Name The name of the company. This is displayed in the popup header when a facility point is selected on the map. In cases where the facility is known by a colloquial name (e.g. MW Industries: Sussex Wire), it is included as part of the name.
Location The city and state where the facility is located. This is displayed in the first line of text in the popup when a facility point is selected on the map.
Public Description A brief description of the facility’s activities. This is displayed in the second line of text in the popup when a facility point is selected on the map.
Vehicle Type A list of the vehicle types made or supplied by the facility. For the bus sector, these are: “Coach,” “Metro Bus,” “Paratransit,” “School,” “Shuttle.” For the rail sector, these are: “Commuter,” “High Speed,” ““Light Rail,” “Monorail,” and “Trolley/Tram.”

This is displayed in the last line of text in the popup when a facility point is selected on the map. This field may be left blank when there is significant uncertainty about past, present, or potential vehicle types associated with the facility.
