The Power of Working People Coming Together Is on Display this Labor Day
In the midst of sustained attacks on workers by the Trump administration, the nation will observe Labor Day this weekend and American workers around the country will stand together to fight for their their rights. Since taking office, President Trump:
- Stripped collective bargaining rights from more than 80% of the federal workforce.
- Cost the nation 37,000 manufacturing jobs since April, then fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics for reporting those numbers.
- Halted the work of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, which investigates and fights employment discrimination by federal contractors.
- Has left the National Labor Relations Board with just one member, effectively shutting it down by depriving it of the quorum necessary to decide cases.
- Fired more than 90% of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health staff. He was then forced to rehire some of those workers.
- Cut the minimum wage for workers on federal contracts by 25%.
In response to the administration’s anti-worker policies and in honor of Labor Day, the BlueGreen Alliance released the following statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:
“Now more than ever—with a union buster in the White House hell bent on attacking working people at every turn—we have to remember what this day signifies. Labor Day is about the immense power that working people have when they come together and use their collective voice.
“There is a reason that Donald Trump is attacking unions. It’s because unions work, and because he knows that strong unions are the best tool we have to fight back against his exploitative, authoritarian regime. So, on this Labor Day, and every day, the BlueGreen Alliance salutes the enduring fighting spirit of the labor movement.”
