Trump Request Slashes Funding for Working People and Clean Energy

April 3, 2026

Today, the Trump administration released its budget request for fiscal year 2027. The budget amplifies defense spending to a historic $1.5 trillion—a 42% increase from the preceding year—while reducing non-defense spending by $73 billion, or 10%. This reduction is targeted in part towards funds that were previously allocated towards clean energy, environmental justice, and climate protections.

Following the announcement, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:

“Trump is doubling down on his attacks on clean energy, while even his own voters recognize that it’s the fastest, cheapest way to get new energy on the grid during a time when demand is at an all-time high and utility bills are skyrocketing. This budget request slashes the funding that is meant for working people and communities that need it most and instead funnels that money into billionaires’ pockets, vanity projects, and war after war. Our nation deserves a sensible budget that invests taxpayer dollars into working people, not this billionaire giveaway.”
