Building Clean: Improving Efficiency, Health, and Equity in Housing and Creating Good Jobs

When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Solidarity for Climate Action: The Plan We Need to Get American Manufacturing Back on Track

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

BlueGreen Alliance Responds to Request for Information on Regional Clean Hubs Implementation Strategy

Hydrogen is an interesting opportunity to put people to work in the clean economy using the careers and skill-sets that they have today. Hydrogen is currently produced for a number of uses in the U.S., and reducing emissions from that process will allow workers to retain jobs while we make progress on climate goals. The industry also requires existing skill-sets in construction and operations and maintenance and hydrogen as a fuel can substitute for fossil fuels for some industrial processes.

Responsible Mining Important in Building Clean Energy Supply Chain

The Biden administration today announced a number of new investments in the domestic production of critical minerals and materials necessary to build the nation’s clean energy supply chain. The funding includes efforts to access important elements such as lithium and cobalt, which are used in batteries, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and solar panels. A June 2021 report from the administration found an over-reliance on foreign sources for these and other materials.

Biden Administration’s EV Charging Announcement Will Bring Good Jobs to Communities Around the Country

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) released its implementation guidance for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program (NEVI), a $5 billion investment and new program in President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). The guidance will help states build out an electric vehicle (EV) charging network along the interstate highway system, a critical contribution to the Biden administration’s goal of installing 500,000 public EV chargers nationwide by 2030.

New Executive Order Will Promote Good, Union Jobs, Protect Workers and the Environment 

At an event today, President Joe Biden outlined a new executive order (EO) designed to ensure Project Labor Agreements (PLAs)—collective bargaining agreements covering all of the craft workers on a construction project that provide comprehensive guidance and set mutual expectations for large projects—are required for federally funded projects over $35 million dollars. PLAs are considered the gold standard of labor provisions by most building trades unions.

Buy Clean on the Federal Stage – From Concept to Reality

On December 8, 2021, President Biden released Executive Order 14057 (EO), “Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability,” and the accompanying Federal Sustainability Plan, officially launching the first-ever national Buy Clean program. In his EO, President Biden outlined pathways for the federal government to use its scale and procurement power to help achieve net-zero emissions economy-wide by no later than 2050. Buy Clean policy is included in this strategy for the first time ever in federal procurement.
