COVID-19 Relief Welcome, but Much Work Remains

Yesterday, the U.S. Congress passed an end of year package that includes $1.4 trillion in government funding and $900 billion for COVID-19 relief, among other provisions.

In response, the BlueGreen Alliance released the following statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:

“While this package is by no means perfect, the COVID-19 relief included is welcome by the countless individuals and working families that have been waiting months for this much needed aid. We commend Congress for getting it done, and for doing so without letting corporations off the hook for keeping their workers safe and healthy.

“However, critical funding for state and local governments and other key provisions, including comprehensive labor standards on clean energy provisions, were left on the cutting room floor. By failing to include comprehensive Davis Bacon and Buy America coverage, this bill undermines the promise of living wages, healthcare, and a chance at retirement in an industry already ripe with poor workforce protections. This package simply does not go far enough to protect working families or to address America’s ongoing and interconnected challenges of climate change, economic inequality, and racial inequality. It is critically important the next Congress work with the Biden-Harris administration to provide the relief and recovery desperately needed.”
