Senate GOP’s COVID-19 Bill Leaves Working People Behind

As leaders in Congress continue to negotiate a legislative package in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BlueGreen Alliance called on Congressional leadership to support a list of priorities for any economic stimulus package related to the crisis and released the following statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:

March 23, 2020

“Our nation is in an unprecedented crisis, and we are likely to see millions of jobs lost in the next few months. Congress must pass urgently needed aid and they must pass it now. But Senator Mitch McConnell’s proposal would send billions of dollars to big corporations with not nearly enough accountability to prevent them from laying off workers or to ensure that assistance gets to the workers and firms that need it. We need transparency, not secret sweetheart deals. We’ve seen this movie before, and it ends with a bunch of rich people getting richer, while workers get left behind.

“Democrats are right to hold the line and make sure that a package gets done fast and done right. Families and workers need immediate help, including access to affordable testing and care; expanding unemployment insurance and paid leave; and getting critical resources to hospitals and schools. We urge Congress to advance a package immediately that meets these needs while ensuring workers—not CEOs—see the benefits.”
