When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

BlueGreen Alliance and Environmental Partners Submit Comments Opposing Leeway for Industry Recognized Apprenticeship Programs in Construction Industry

The BlueGreen Alliance alongside its six environmental partners submitted comments to the Department of Labor (DOL) opposing a proposed rulemaking that would leave the door open to Industry Recognized Apprenticeship Programs (IRAPs) in the construction industry. The group urged the DOL to permanently exempt the use of IRAPs from the industry.

The BlueGreen Alliance, a coalition of fourteen of the nation’s largest and most influential labor unions and environmental organizations, collectively representing millions of members and supporters, urges the Department of Labor (DOL) to withdraw its proposed rulemaking titled “Apprenticeship Programs, Labor Standards for Registration, Amendment of Regulations,” which would exempt Industry Recognized Apprenticeship Programs (IRAPs) from being used within the construction industry for an indefinite period of time.

The BlueGreen Alliance’s National Director for Occupational and Environmental Health Mike Wilson today testified at the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Homeland Security, Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Innovation’s hearing on the Chemical Facility Anti-terrorism Standards (CFATS) program about the importance of protecting communities and workers at chemical facilities around the country.

 The BlueGreen Alliance, a coalition of the nation’s largest labor unions and environmental organizations, collectively representing millions of members and supporters, urges the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to stand up for industrial workers, first responders, and fence-line communities by withdrawing its proposal to rescind crucial amendments to the successful Risk Management Program and immediately implement the original Chemical Disaster Rule.

BlueGreen Alliance Urges EPA not to Weaken Chemical Disaster Rule at Public Hearing

On June 14 in Washington, D.C., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hosted its only public hearing on its proposal to weaken the Chemical Disaster Rule. BlueGreen Alliance National Director for Occupational and Environmental Health Mike Wilson and Executive and Program Assistant Alana Byrd were among the many witnesses urging the agency not to rollback the important protections included in the rule.
