Gov. Polis’s Veto Blocks Union Rights, Undermining Colorado’s Clean Energy Workforce and Climate Goals

May 16, 2025

Today, Colorado Governor Jared Polis vetoed Senate Bill 25-005, the “Worker Protection Collective Bargaining Act.” This decision keeps an outdated law on the books that forces workers to hold a second election after voting to form a union. The law requires a 75% supermajority in the second vote.

Following the governor’s veto, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Senior Director of Western States Chris Markuson:

“The governor’s veto of this legislation is deeply disappointing. The skilled labor of steelworkers, construction and utility workers, electricians, and pipefitters is critical to maintaining clean-energy generation, modernizing our electric grid, and manufacturing the grid components needed to meet the state’s ambitious climate goals. With this veto, Gov. Polis is undermining his own climate goals and putting the interests of millionaires and billionaires over the workers who will power Colorado’s clean energy future.”
