BlueGreen Alliance | Policy Platforms, Shared Agendas, Plans

The BlueGreen Alliance and our members in the labor and environmental movements work together to develop platforms, agendas, and plans exploring what policies are needed to create a clean, prosperous, and equitable economy.

Solidarity for Climate Action

In June 2019, leaders from the BlueGreen Alliance released their platform to create good-paying jobs and fight income inequality by addressing the climate crisis. The historic platform—entitled Solidarity for Climate Action—puts workers at the forefront of the ongoing discussion about how the United States will tackle climate change. It is the first such comprehensive plan to address climate change put forward by the nation’s largest unions.

The “Solidarity for Climate Action” platform addresses the dual crises of climate change and income inequality in a number of ways, including calling for rapid reductions of greenhouse gas emissions to put America on a pathway of reducing its emissions to net zero by 2050 and massive immediate investments in clean and renewable technology and energy efficiency across all sectors; efforts to increase union density across the country through strong support of the right to organize throughout the economy, including in the clean technology sectors; and rebuilding and modernizing America’s infrastructure and making our communities more resilient.

Solidarity for Racial Equity

Systemic racism and oppression are knotted into all of the challenges to building a clean, healthy, and thriving economy for all—the issues that the BlueGreen Alliance was created to address. Intertwined problems require solutions that address the impact on all of the strands. In February 2022, the BlueGreen Alliance released the “Solidarity For Racial Equity” platform designed to ensure that our environmental and economic policy work will lessen economic, racial, and environmental injustice across the United States in ways that are as mutually reinforcing as their causes and lead to a more just society.

National Energy Transition Policy Framework

A fair and equitable transition must keep workers and communities whole, revitalize and diversify local economies, and address racial inequities while ensuring the retention and creation of–and accessible pathways into–good-paying, union jobs. Therefore, many of the policy ideas and structural recommendations in this document are applicable to a wide universe of communities and workers in the energy economy. These ideas include the recognition that the best approach to energy transition among workers and communities not already impacted is one that prevents economic disruption and employment loss.

This platform recommends policies that will bring immediate and long-term benefits to workers and communities.
