Trump’s Pitch to Michigan is Just Another Desperate Distraction from the Harm of the OBBBA
President Donald Trump spoke at the General Motors (GM) test plant in Milford, MI today. The president talked on the economy and made bold claims about his impact on the state. Recent data out by the BlueGreen Alliance (BGA) shows that due to Trump administration policies and the GOP’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA), several clean energy, manufacturing, and industrial projects have been canceled or stalled in the state and many others face a more difficult financial landscape.
The GM plant is located in the highly contested 7th congressional district where Rep. Tom Barrett (R-MI) is fighting to keep his seat after voting to pass the OBBBA, which cut funding for clean energy and manufacturing projects in addition to cutting millions of people off of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), making cuts to Medicaid, and increasing healthcare premiums.
In response to the president’s visit, the BlueGreen Alliance released the following statement from Michigan Senior State Policy Manager Frank Houston:
“Trump is clearly on a damage control tour to try to hide the impacts of the GOP’s OBBBA. This bill, which Trump demanded and that Republicans in Congress, including Rep. Barrett, handed him, has already resulted in lost jobs here on the ground with even more at risk. The Michiganders, who have seen the opportunity for Michigan to be a leader in the clean economy put at risk to give massive tax breaks to billionaires, know that they are not Trump’s or Barrett’s priority.”
