USMCA Needs Significant Changes to Work for Working People and the Environment

July 1, 2026

The Trump administration announced today that it will not extend the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The announcement follows a meeting of trade chiefs from the three nations. The agreement now moves into a phase of annual reviews until its potential expiration in 2036.

Last week, the BlueGreen Alliance released a trade platform, demanding significant changes to the deal to ensure robust worker and environmental protections.

Following the announcement, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:

“The USMCA did not do enough to end the race to the bottom for labor rights and environmental protection created by the North American Free Trade Agreement. For too long, these deals put profits over people and the planet, rewarding U.S. companies for offshoring production, paying the lowest wages possible, and laying waste to the environment. Today’s decision gives us an opportunity to fix USMCA to raise labor and environmental standards across North America. Alongside our partners, BGA will continue to fight for a trade agreement that puts working people and the environment first.”
