Vineyard Wind Completes Construction, Second Commercial-Scale Offshore Wind Project in US
Vineyard Wind finalized construction on its 800-megawatt offshore wind project late Friday. This is enough energy to power 400,000 homes.
This is the second commercial-scale offshore wind project in the United States to finish installation. While Vineyard Wind already provides power to the New England grid, additional testing needs to take place before the project is fully operational.
The project employed 3,700 workers—many of them union—while under construction and is expected to save ratepayers billions in its first 20 years of operation.
Following completed construction, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:
“Even in the face of baseless opposition from the Trump administration, Vineyard Wind has completed construction of its offshore wind project. This is incredible news for the residents of New England during the growing crisis of energy affordability. Offshore Wind is a major opportunity for good, union jobs, affordable and reliable electricity, and more power to meet the rising demand of industry. Congratulations to Vineyard Wind and what they’ve accomplished, and to the workers who built this domestic source of energy—it’s a huge win.”
