Mayor Mamdani Signs Essential Heat Protections for New York Workers

June 22, 2026

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed an Executive Order directing the development of protections for workers from extreme heat during an event attended by BlueGreen Alliance Northeast Regional Field Organizer Lisa Wood. The Executive Order calls for heat illness prevention plans for 1.4 million New Yorkers who work outside, with additional guidance for indoor workers to be issued by March 2027.

Following the announcement, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Northeast Regional Field Organizer Lisa Wood, who attended the signing:

“This Executive Order will save lives and keep workers out of hospitals. Heat illness is preventable, and with rising temperatures, extreme heat events are increasing in both severity and frequency. Working people should not have to risk their health and safety just to make a living. Thank you to Mayor Mamdani, and we hope other cities and states will follow in the mayor’s footsteps to keep workers safe.”
